DAVISON, MI — Thirteen Davison High School students are moving on to play college athletics in the fall.

During a signing day event at the school on Wednesday, April 16, athletes spanning nine different sports declared their intention to continue their athletic careers. Three are headed to Division I schools, including two — Jordan McDermitt and Justin Oliver — staying in-state.

“If you’ve driven around Davison Road, Jordan’s the blonde girl you’ve probably seen running all winter long,” girls cross country coach Ron Whitman said of McDermitt, a state qualifier in cross country and indoor and outdoor track who committed to Eastern Michigan.

“She’s a very determined individual who focuses on her goals. She puts in the time, and not everyone can.”

Justin Oliver, a two-time state champion, will wrestle at Central Michigan in the fall, a Top 25 program known for churning out good wrestlers. Two of his teammates, Matt Miller and Thomas Garty, also signed their letters of intent to wrestle at NAIA Division II Indiana Tech.

Head coach Roy Hall, who called this senior class the “most productive senior class we’ve ever had, individually,” offered some advice to his trio.

“Don’t stop now,” Hall said. “Your goal was a college scholarship, but it can’t be that (anymore). Now you have to succeed academically and athletically to get it done at the highest level.”

Courtney Weaver, an 11-time national champion and record holder in swimming at the YMCA level, will swim at the University of Georgia. Adam Cooper, coach of the YMCA Falcons swim club and a mentor of Weaver’s since she was 4, called it “great” to see her move on.

“She’s been a great leader for our kids,” Cooper said. “I’ve had the chance to work with her for quite a while and it’ll be great to see her chase after some NCAA titles.”

Davison Schools Superintendent Eric Lieske, whose son Drew will compete on the shooting team at Hillsdale College, said the 11 students combined earned a 3.4 GPA.

Said Davison athletic director Josh Wallberg: “These young men and women represent what is great about high school. Not only on the field but in the classroom, and I look forward to following them.”
