Florida girl makes history, plays QB in high school game

None of that matters.

After taking two snaps, she’s believed to be the first female to play quarterback for a Florida high school team. DiMeglio, who is the third string QB for South Plantation High School, handed the ball off both times in a 31-14 win over Nova High School.

For DiMeglio, who has a ponytail hanging out of her helmet, football is a family thing. Her parents met at a Miami Dolphins game. She wears No. 13 as a tribute to Dan Marino.

“I just do my own thing,” DiMeglio told reporters after the game.. “It’s a lot of attention, but I just kind of don’t worry about that much.”

Fans were chanting “Put Erin in! Put Erin in!” during the final minutes, before she checked in with 1:40 left.

“God bless her,” South Plantation coach Doug Gatewood told The Associated Press. “She handles it better than anybody else. She goes on the field, she has single-minded focus. It’s crazy. It’s great publicity for the school, it’s a positive thing, but at the end of the day that’s not why we did it. We did it because she’s a legitimate third-string quarterback.”
