Heavy rain and winds swept through the state Monday, accompanied by tornado warnings in some areas and prompting the postponement of almost all high school sports events, including most of the scheduled matches in the NJSIAA girls tennis tournament.
All but five of the tennis quarterfinals in the Group 1, Group 3 and Non-Public A sections were postponed and merged into Tuesday’s schedule with Group 2, Group 4 and Non-Public B games.
A handful of teams were able to play on Monday by either moving to an indoor facility or finding a break in the bad weather in the afternoon. Pingry and Red Bank Catholic won their quarterfinal matches, setting up a meeting of the Monmouth County rivals in the South Jersey, Non-Public A semifinals.
Assuming the weather cooperates, the winning teams will advance to play in the sectional semifinals Wednesday and Thursday. Sectional finals are scheduled to be played Monday, while the group semifinals and finals are scheduled to be played Oct. 16.
In boys soccer there were multiple postponements, including first round match-ups in the Union and Hudson County Tournaments. Those games were pushed back to Tuesday.
One game that was not postponed was in the Hudson County Tournament, where 11th-seeded Dickinson upset sixth-seeded Union City, 3-2, in Union City.
