High-school sports: Weekly wrap

In addition to the two Athletes of the Week,
The Dispatch selects a top performer in each sport in season:

Donny Deep

OLENTANGY LIBERTY, BOYS SOCCER

Deep, a junior forward, scored both goals for fifth-ranked Liberty in a 2-1 win over
sixth-ranked Cleveland St. Ignatius. He also scored the lone goal in a 1-0 victory over Hilliard
Davidson. The Patriots also tied Westerville Central 0-0.

Jake Mandel

DUBLIN JEROME, BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Mandel, a senior, placed second out of 130 runners in the Midwest Meet of Champions at Hilliard
Bradley, pacing Jerome to the title with 69 points. He ran 15 minutes, 34.6 seconds, trailing only
Mark Hadley of Youngstown Boardman (15:15.29).

Samantha Butterbaugh

AMANDA-CLEARCREEK, GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Butterbaugh, a senior, took first place in the Aaron Carter Memorial Invitational at Westfall in
a time of 19:46. Butterbaugh has placed in her past three invitationals.

Andrea Ballinger

COLUMBUS ACADEMY, GIRLS TENNIS

Ballinger, a junior, won the Mid-State League Ohio Division singles championship with a 10-2 win
in the final over Kiley Kinnard of Grandview. Ballinger also won three regular-season matches.

Liza Weisman

BEXLEY, GIRLS GOLF

Weisman, a sophomore, shot an even-par 72 with four birdies to win the Division II sectional
tournament at Blacklick Woods. Weisman, who qualified for the state tournament with a second-place
finish in the district tournament, won Mid-State League player of the year honors.

Samantha Hurdzan

BLOOM-CARROLL, GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Hurdzan, a junior middle hitter, was essential in the Bulldogs raising their record to 13-1 in
defeating Fairfield Union and Teays Valley 3-0 in Mid-State League Buckeye Division matches and
Ready 2-1 and Heath 2-0 in a tournament at Ready. She totaled 34 kills, 11 service points, 11
blocks and 11 digs.

Ashley Barno

BEXLEY, FIELD HOCKEY

Barno, a sophomore, had a hat trick in a 7-0 win over Lancaster and then scored the overtime
winner in a 2-1 win over Watterson. The forward has led the Lions to a 9-1 record this fall and has
seven goals and four assists.

Charles Holland

WEST, FOOTBALL

Holland, a senior quarterback, accounted for 360 yards and seven touchdowns in a 51-16 victory
over Africentric in City League South play. Holland rushed for 278 yards on 28 carries with six
touchdowns, passed for 85 yards and a score and ran and threw for two-point conversions.
