High school spring playoffs heat up

The spring sports playoffs continue this week as more than 100 Middle Georgia teams take the course, track or field.

The GISA golf tournament is first on the docket, taking place Monday at Southern Hills Golf Club in Hawkinsville.

Stratford rolled to a 16-shot win at the Region 2-AAA tournament, and the Eagles will be seeking a second state championship in the past three days following the boys track and field championship Saturday. Matthew Beringer leads the Eagles after shooting a 73 to win region medalist honors by seven shots.

The soccer playoffs begin for the GHSA on Tuesday, with the GISA picking up with its quarterfinals. The Stratford boys host Augusta Prep on Wednesday, while the girls host Westminster on Tuesday. The Mount de Sales boys travel to Westminster, and the girls will travel to Augusta Prep.

Houston County’s boys host Ola in the opening round in Class AAAAA on Tuesday, while Warner Robins travels to Starr’s Mill. Perry and Mary Persons will be at home, while Howard and Veterans head on the road in the opening round. Peach County and FPD will also be at home this week.

The Houston County girls play at Northgate in Class AAAAA on Wednesday, while Rutland and Veterans will host playoff games. Howard, Mary Persons, Central and Peach County are all on the road, while FPD has a bye in Class A.

The GISA individual tennis tournament begins Thursday at John Drew Smith Tennis Center. Stratford’s Eliza Freedman and Mount de Sales’ Alex Kirschbaum were the top two girls seeds from Region 2-AAA, while the team of Laura Johnson and Stephanie Campbell of Westfield will try to win a second straight state title for the Hornets. Campbell teamed with Valerie McClure to win the title last year. Stratford’s Sachin Khurana beat brother Sarin Khurana in the Region 2-AAA championship and gives the Eagles two talented competitors in the state tournament.

The top doubles seed from Region 2-AAA was Stratford’s Mark Barrow and Kenji Yoshida.

In GHSA boys tennis, Mary Persons travels to South Effingham in the second round in Class AAAA, while West Laurens hosts Wayne County. The Peach County boys travel to Appling County in Class AAA, while Jeff Davis and Bleckley County host Berrien and Cook, respectively.

In the second round of the girls tournaments, West Laurens hosts South Effingham in Class AAAA, while Mary Persons travels to Richmond Academy. Dodge County and Bleckley County host in Class AAA and Class AA, respectively.

The GHSA girls state track meet begins Thursday at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany. Northside sprinter Cassondra Hall, Bleckley County distance runner Ellen Powell, Dublin hurdler Samone Burger, Southwest jumper Kayla Waters, Rutland jumper Tyler Ragin and FPD pole vaulter Carson Dinger are among those expected to contend for individual championships.

The GHSA baseball playoffs begin Friday, although brackets aren’t set yet. Houston County, Veterans, Howard, Bleckley County and FPD are guaranteed home series in the first round.
