Millburn High School sports program wins ShopRite Cup crown

Millburn High School’s interscholastic sports program, bolstered by state tournament titles in varsity boys soccer, varsity girls tennis and varsity boys tennis, has been declared the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association 10th annual ShopRite Cup Group 4 winner for the 2012-13 academic year.

Athletic programs accumulated points based on performance in championship play in 32 NJSIAA sanctioned points. Schools earn points for placing first through fourth in state tourney play.

Millburn topped Group 4 with 56 points. Westfield High School placed second with 54 points. Columbia High School, Millburn’s fellow Super Essex Conference (SEC) member, and Hunterdon Central shared third place with 52 points.

Livingston High School, also a member of the SEC, and Southern Regional High School, also earned Group 4 recognition with 49 points apiece.

Millburn also placed second in boys golf, third in boys cross country and third in boys fencing.

“I would like to thank all of you for your contributions to our athletic teams and to our students in helping to make their athletic experience and enjoyable and rewarding one,” wrote Millburn High School athletic director Ted D’Alessio in an email to the school’s coaches.

“I feel compelled to add that a school gets three additional points toward (its) ShopRite Cup total whenever a school remains disqualification free for the entire season,” D’Alessio wrote. “We earned three points in the fall and spring (seasons) to help us secure the cup.”

Joining Millburn as ShopRite Cup champions are Group 1 Metuchen High School (59 points), Group 2 Haddonfield Memorial High School (55 points), Group 3 Kingsway Regional High School (71 points), non-public Group A Christian Brothers Academy (170 points) and non-public Group B Villa Walsh Academy (79 points).

“In its 10th consecutive year, the race for the ShopRite Cup has become as exciting a competition as there is in high school sports,” said Steve Timko, NJSIAA executive director. “The Cup is a unique honor, because it recognizes the finest high school athletic programs in the state for collective effort. We congratulate this year’s six champions on another outstanding year.”

The presentation of the 2012-13 ShopRite Cup for Group 4 is scheduled to take place prior to the Saturday, Sept. 21, varsity football game between the Millers and Livingston High School at Millburn High School’s Dr. Keith A. Neigel Field. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
