Tragedy struck Fulton County, Georgia, on Friday night as 16-year-old football player De’Antre Turman of Creekside High died.
According to CBS Atlanta, Turman collapsed during a scrimmage against Banneker and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to the family of this student,” Fulton County school district spokeswoman Samantha Evans told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution early Saturday. “This is truly a horrific way to begin a school year.”
Turman, a junior, played free safety for Creekside. He had a promising future, already possessing a scholarship offer from Kentucky, according to 247Sports.
The cause of Turman’s death is not yet known.
He is at least the third player to perish after collapsing on the football player this summer, following Canyon (Anaheim, Calif.) freshman Mitchell Cook and Seventy-First (Fayetteville, N.C.) junior Evan Raines.
