A 14-year-old Anaheim boy died Wednesday, several hours after collapsing at his high school football practice.
According to the Orange County Register, Mitchell Cook collapsed after warming up with the freshman football team at Canyon High School. Adults at the practice attempted CPR on the teen while awaiting paramedics, but Cook was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
“I would never have guessed it would end like this,” Cook’s adopted father, Jim, told the paper. “We did see a lot in his few, brief years on the planet.”
Mitchell and his older brother were adopted by the Cooks after the boys were abandoned by their mother, the paper reports.
Jim Cook said that Mitchell had an existing heart condition and attended regular doctor check-ups.
“Once his heart stopped, there was just no getting it back,” Cook said.
According to the report, an autopsy will be performed to determine the official cause of death.
