BREWER, Maine — Dave Utterback is in just his second year as the athletic administrator at Brewer High School, but it’s been long enough for him to get a strong sense for the passion that follows the history of the school’s athletic program.
That’s prompted Utterback and others in the community to work toward the establishment of a Brewer High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
A committee has been gathering monthly to work out details concerning the effort, and this week, members met with WBRC Architects/Engineers to discuss developing a Hall of Fame display area at the school.
“We want to do a good job of honoring and remembering the student-athletes who have come through here as Brewer Witches,” said Utterback.
Plans call for the first induction class to be honored during Homecoming weekend in early October, with the festivities doubling as an opportunity for alumni and other area residents to visit the school and view the results of the renovation project.
“The project had taken a back seat for a year because of the construction,” said Utterback. “But with the renovations at the high school being completed, this will be the perfect time to get people back through the doors to see the first hall of fame class and also see the improvements that have been made through the two bonds [that funded the renovations].”
Nomination forms for potential inductees into the Brewer Athletic Hall of Fame are available at http://www.brewerhs.org/athletics/bhs-hall-of-fame. Organizers also are seeking financial support for the display area and other elements of the effort. To make a donation or for more information, call Utterback at 989-8629.
