Coaching Carousel: Four high school football coaches resign

The following is a list of Alabama high school coaching moves reported from June 20 to July 3, 2013. If you know of anyone who was left off the list, please e-mail high school sports producer Wesley Sinor at wsinor@al.com.


Scott Sullivan has resigned as Opelika’s baseball coach. He went 15-17 with the Bulldogs last season. [The Opelika-Auburn News]

Austin’s Bruce Hamilton has stepped down as the school’s softball coach, but will remain as head basketball coach. Hamilton went 33-11 in 2012 and 25-23-1 in 2013, earning a trip to the state tournament. [The Decatur Daily]


Demopolis boys soccer coach Keith Jackson has resigned to become the assistant principal at Thomasville. Jackson coached Demopolis for three seasons and led the Tigers to their first area championship and home playoff game. [The Demopolis Times]

Fort Payne wrestling coach Heath Vincent has stepped down after two seasons with the Wildcats. [The Daily Times-Journal]

Arab has hired Justin Jonus as its new girls basketball coach. [The Sand Mountain Reporter]


Crossville will be looking to hire new football and baseball coaches following the resignations of Robi Coker and Phillip Johnson, respectively. Coker was 1-9 in one season with the Lions. [The Sand Mountain Reporter]

Neal Wester has resigned as Oneonta’s head basketball coach to take a position at his alma mater, Cherokee County. Wester coached the Redskins for 10 seasons and led them to the Class 4A state semifinals in 2012. [The Blount Countian]


Vincent head football coach Zeb Ellison has been hired as Chelsea’s defensive coordinator. Ellison went 16-7 and made the playoffs both years at Vincent. [The Shelby County Reporter]

Head football coach Jason Hill and head basketball coach Will Copeland have both resigned at Phil Campbell. Hill went 2-8 in his lone year with the Bobcats. Copeland coached the hoops team to 44 wins in three years and has been hired at Sylacauga to replace Josh Golden. [The Franklin County Times, The Daily Home]

Michael Hathorn has resigned as head football coach at Hatton. Hathorn was 3-7 in his only year with the Hornets. [The Decatur Daily]

Red Bay has hired Matt Noah as its new boys basketball coach. Noah has coached the junior varsity at Muscle Shoals for the past four years and also served as a varsity assistant. He will replace Greg Cash. [The Franklin County Times]


Pickens Academy has hired Josh Thacker as its new football coach. It is the first head coaching job for Thacker, who succeeds Robert Gartman. The Pirates fell to Restoration in the AISA Class A championship last season and finished 10-3. [TuscPreps.com]
