Under the leadership of co-chairmen Pat Richter and Steve Underwood, Madison East High School is embarking on a $1 million fundraising campaign for its athletic department.
Richter and Underwood, members of the East class of 1959, went on to serve as co-captains of the University of Wisconsin’s 1963 Rose Bowl team.
The purpose of the campaign is to raise funds for immediate needs and major projects such as weight room reconstruction, swimming pool touch pads, a new sound system for the gymnasium, scoreboards, fieldhouse bleachers and chairs, renovation of the tennis courts, updated football equipment and athletic field renovation.
“School district budgetary limitations prevent addressing many needs through normal funding procedures,” Richter said in a news release. “For that reason we are asking assistance from alumni, parents and friends.”
The drive will kickoff at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, at The Bridges Golf Course, located at Aberg Ave. and Shopko Drive in Madison. Volunteers will meet for a training session at 4:30 p.m., followed by a program and speakers at 5:30 p.m.
Among those scheduled to attend are East alumni including John Olson (1953), Tim Healy (1969), East High Boosters president Tony Arneson (1976) and Jean Schroeder (1982). Also scheduled to be present will be Mike Moskoff, East principal Mary Kelley and East High athletics director Dave Kapp.
Gifts may be made payable by check to the Foundation for Madison Public Schools, 455 Science Dr., Suite 130, Madison 53711 or online at its website, www.fmps.org.
