High school sports round up: Mona Shore’s Timothy McClain saves the day

Despite the holiday break, high school sports action heated up on Saturday around the state of Michigan. We had close basketball games, undefeated wrestlers and a freshman goaltender shock the world.

A pair of last-second free throws gave the Caledonia boys basketball team breathing room against Stevensville Lakeshore in the Hope Holiday Shootout. Holland nailed 12 3-pointers in the same tournament.

Rockford’s Brandon Houle was named the most outstanding wrestler at the LH Invite at Hastings, as the Rams had four individual champions and won the tournament.

Muskegon Mona Shore’s freshman goaltender put on an incredible show in a win against Portage Central in boys ice hockey.

The Saginaw Swan Valley wrestling team had five individual champions and won the Coca-Cola Classic at Mount Pleasant. Marysville did the same at the Hillsdale Invitational.

Grand Rapids Catholic Central poured on the goals in the third period of its win against the East Grand Rapids boys ice hockey team.

Saginaw Novel knocked off visiting Freeland in boys basketball, and 10 different Panthers scored points in the game.

More than two weeks off for the holidays didn’t seem to faze the Hudsonville girls bowling team as the Eagles captured Saturday’s OK Red preseason meet.

The Delton Kellogg competitive cheer team had the highest score in each round of its own invitational Saturday, while Portage Central achieved one of its biggest goals.
