Boys basketball

Highland 52, Copley 47

Senior Alex Withers scored 17 points, junior Brogan Scott added 16 points and the host Hornets (15-6, 11-3) defeated the Indians (8-14, 5-9) to clinch the Suburban League title for the first time since the 2004-05 season.

Junior Tanner Houska scored 10 points for the Hornets, and senior Brandon Chillious led the Indians with 14 points.

Stow 54, Solon 49

The visiting Bulldogs (18-4, 8-2) outscored the Comets (7-15, 3-7) 14-6 in the second quarter to rally for the Northeast Ohio Conference win.

Sophomore Nathan Bower-Malone scored 16 points, and senior Matt Beech added 15 points for the Bulldogs. Senior Lavonne Davis led the Comets with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Streetsboro 82,
Waterloo 52

Senior Daniel Sapp’s 26 points led the visiting Rockets (15-7, 11-1) to a win over the Vikings (6-16, 3-9) and the Portage Trail Conference-County Division title.

Senior Reggie Dublin scored 15 points, and senior Devin Rencher and sophomore Jerry Judd each added 13 points for the Rockets. Senior Jacob Flarida led the Vikings with 21 points.

Cleveland Benedictine 60

Sophomore Anthony Christian scored 27 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead the visiting Knights (14-7, 7-3) over the Bengals (8-14, 3-7) and clinch a share of the North Coast League Championship with Mentor Lake Catholic.

Senior Ben Cook made three free throws, and sophomore Brendan Spaulding made four free throws in the fourth quarter to help the Knights pull away for the win.

Senior Mike Londa added 12 points for the Knights.

Max Siwik’s 23 points led the host Warriors over the Cougars in a North Coast League game.

The Warriors led 48-37 after the third quarter and fought off a furious fourth-quarter rally by the Cougars.

The Cougars made seven 3-pointers and went 12-of-13 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter but just fell short in the rally.

Sophomore Mitch Peterson scored 22 points, and junior Dom Mittiga added 14 points for the Warriors.

Canton McKinley 44

Senior Jalen Hudson scored 23 points, and the visiting Fighting Irish (13-9) defeated the Bulldogs (11-10) in a nonleague game.

Sophomore V.J. King scored 19 points for the Fighting Irish, and junior Sam Burton led the Bulldogs with 18 points.

Senior John Zuccaro led the host Explorers (10-11, 3-7) over the Tigers (8-12, 2-8) in a Northeast Ohio League game. Senior Chris Koscho added 10 points for the Explorers.

Youngstown Ursuline 60

Senior Mitchell Spotleson scored 20 points, senior Alex Belinsky added 17 points and the visiting Blue Streaks (20-2) defeated the Fighting Irish (12-7) in a nonleague game.

Cleveland East Tech 55,
Barberton 53

The visiting Scarabs (18-4) overcame an 11-point deficit with a 24-11 run in the fourth quarter to defeat the Magics (10-12). Senior Zach Sperling scored 12 points, and senior Phil Washington and sophomore Brandon Taylor-Mitchell each scored 10 points for the Magics.

Ledgemont 45

Dillon Blewitt scored 15 points to lead the host Bombers (17-5) in a nonleague win.


University School 6,
Kent Roosevelt 0

Evan Krueger scored two goals and had an assist, and the Preppers defeated the Rough Riders in an OHSAA playoff game at the Kent State Ice Arena. Andrew Domonkos, Mark Megerian, Ryan Gorbett and Jackson Johnson each scored for the Preppers, and Gorbett, Domonkos, Clarke Jones, Kyle Keane and Reed Rosencrans had assists.

Alex Wakefield, Benny Clark, Michael Mallak and Ryan Hall each scored for the Lancers in a playoff game. Ryan Curtin and Hall each had an assist.


Boys Division II State

Sophomore Eric Krenz of CVCA finished in 11th place in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 54.79 at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton. Krenz is the only area boy or girl swimmer to place in the top 16 in any event at the state meet.
