High school sports: The week ahead

THE WEEK AHEAD


MONDAY-TUESDAY

Boys golf, NCHSAA championships, various sites: Bishop McGuinness (Class 1-A Midwest), Reidsville (Class 2-A Mideast), Williams (Class 3-A Mideast) and Northwest Guilford (Class 4-A Midwest) head into states as regional champions. McGuinness is seeking its fourth straight title.

TUESDAY

Boys tennis, NCHSAA dual team quarterfinals: Northwest Guilford (Class 4-A) and Bishop McGuinness (1-A) are home, while Western Guilford (3-A) travels to Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons.

WEDNESDAY

Baseball, girls soccer and softball, NCHSAA playoffs: First-round play begins, with brackets expected to be available Tuesday.

FRIDAY

Track and field, NCHSAA Class 3-A championship, N.C. AT’s Irwin Belk Track: Northern Guilford doesn’t have T.J. Logan in the sprints this year, but the Nighthawks still have a strong team.

SATURDAY

Track and field — NCHSAA Class 4-A championship, N.C. AT’s

Irwin Belk Track: This should be a showcase for Guilford County’s top female distance runners — Sara Platek of Ragsdale and Tori Churchill and Blair Ramsey of Grimsley .

 

NOTES

McLEAN PICKS JMU: High Point Christian point guard Joey McLean has committed to play basketball at James Madison.

McLean averaged 19.6 points and four steals per game this season for a Cougars squad that went 22-6. McLean graduates as High Point Christian’s all-time leader in points (1,067) and steals (237).

INTERIM AD AT SOUTHEAST: Scott Smith has stepped down as athletics director at Southeast Guilford to become head football coach at Monroe Central Academy. Shawyn Newton, girls basketball coach at Southeast, is serving as interim AD through July 1.

Newton said he is unsure if he will remain AD or if he will continue to coach the Falcons. “We haven’t made any decision beyond the end of the school year,” he said by phone Wednesday.

EAST-WEST GIRLS BASKETBALL: The N.C. Coaches Association has released rosters for the East-West women’s basketball all-star game July 21 at the Greensboro Coliseum.

The West team features Southwest Guilford’s Briana Burgins and Bishop McGuinness’ Cameron Nieters, as well as Southeast Guilford coach Shawyn Newton, who will serve as an assistant.
