High school sports: Weather affects state wrestling, bowling, swimming and … – The Star

The latest winter storm to hit New Jersey resulted in changes to NJSIAA bowling, swimming and track and field events scheduled today and resulted in one change to the championship round of the state team wrestling tournament, in which more postponements could come today.

Don Danser, the NJSIAA track and field tournament director, announced yesterday that today’s championship meets for Groups 1 and 4 had been postponed to Monday at 4 p.m. at the original site. They be held at the Bennett Center in Toms River, where the Group 2 and 3 and Non-Public A and B championships remain set for tomorrow at their original times, 9 a.m. for the public meets and 3:30 p.m. for the non-public meets.

The wrestling tournament is scheduled to continue today with sectional finals across the state. If teams are not able to wrestle today, NJSIAA Executive Director Steve Timko said he hopes schools can wrestle the dual meets by noon tomorrow at the latest.

The state group semifinals and finals are scheduled for Sunday at Pine Belt Arena in Toms River, leaving little time between the sectional finals and groups. Also to be considered is that many competing wrestlers would need rest time before having to make weight for the state semifinals and finals – a main reason Timko prefers the sectional finals be wrestled by early Saturday.

As of late last night, three finals had been moved to tomorrow: the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 match-up between Roxbury and visiting Warren Hills was rescheduled for noon, while the North Jersey, Non-Public B final sending Pingry to DePaul and the North Jersey, Section 1, Group 4 final, Hackensack at Clifton, have both been moved to 10 a.m.

The high school bowling season has been extended one more day when the NJSIAA announced the boys team Tournament of Champions has been postponed from today to tomorrow at Carolier Lanes in North Brunswick, beginning at 9 a.m.

In swimming, some meets originally scheduled today that had been moved to tomorrow because of the weather have now been moved again to today because schools do not want their swimmers to have conflicts with club meets that were rescheduled for tomorrow.

In North Jersey, Section 2, Public A, the boys meet pitting Westfield against Hillsborough and the girls meet pitting Westfield against Hunterdon Central are now set for today at the Raritan Bay YMCA in Perth Amboy. The Central Jersey, Public A meets are also now today at Neptune Aquatics Center, with the Toms River North boys swimming against Montgomery and the Cherry Hill West girls going against Montgomery.

Also, the first round Non-Public A meet between Seton Hall Prep and St. Peter’s Prep, originally set for yesterday, is now today at Seton Hall University.
