Infection kills Queensbury, N.Y., football player

The athletics director at Queensbury told the Post-Star of Glens Falls that junior lineman John Vasiliou (va-SIHL’-lee-yoo) died Tuesday afternoon, a day after being taken to Albany Medical Center. School district officials say the cause of the infection was unknown and Warren County health officials say they don’t know what type of infection killed the teen.

The illness has prompted the school district’s physician to recommend members of the varsity, junior varsity and freshman football teams receive preventative treatments of ciprofloxacin, a synthetic antibiotic used to treat different types of bacterial infections.

School officials say no decision has been made about whether to play Saturday’s season-opener.
