2021 PG Kameron Jones

2021 PG Kameron Jones (ECCS) led all scorers for MBL Week 1 with 20 points.

The Major Basketball League (MBL) got off to a great start on opening day at First Assembly Christian School (FACS) in their state of the art facilities. The day started at 11 am with two very intense girl’s games and ending with a 7/8th-grade boy’s game at 7 pm. The first game of the day pitted Team Liberty against Team Lynx with Team Liberty defeating the Lynx 45-37. The duo of Mallory Taylor and Janiya Jones combined for 35 points to help secure their first victory in pool play. Kate McBride scored 17 points in the losing effort for Team Lynx. The second girl’s game was more heated than the first game with Karsen Ryan hitting a buzz-beater bank shot to win the game for Team Mercury over Team Sparks, 39-37. Anandi Farrell-Rousseau led Team Mercury to victory with 11 points and 6 steals. Amya Black had a strong showing with 11 points and 7 rebounds but fell short to Team Mercury.

The Boy’s High School Division games were a little lopsided with players missing from two of the teams. Team Duke was out matched, missing Eddie Buxton Jr. and Tyland Mitchell. They didn’t have enough firepower for a loaded Team Virginia. Marcus Lee Jr. had a dominant performance with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 steals. His running mate Devon Miles added 13 points in the victory over Team Duke. Kyron Pleas, Isaiah Hatley, and Antwarn Smith all posted double digit scoring but fell to Team Virginia. Team TCU were missing their coach, Xavier Joubert, and Kenneth Kimble III due to a car accident that involved Coach Kimble and Xavier. Please pray for a speedy recovery for them. Team TCU played Team Iowa State tough, especially being short handed. Bryson Potts had 16 points and Kenneth Payne killed the boards with 17 rebounds. Jalen Brown left the game early with an ankle injury but was able to score 11 points and 4 rebounds before his departure. Kameron Jones exploded with 20 points to be week’s 1 leading scorer for all divisions. 6’6″ Darius Outlaw played big in the paint with 11 points and 6 rebounds.

In the 7/8th-grade boy’s division, Team Thunder derailed Team Warriors 32-28 with a huge performance by Eric Steward. Steward with a double digit showing with 14 points and 13 rebounds in a winning effort for Team Thunder. His John P. Freeman teammate, Harold Draper III, led Team Warriors with 12 points. Team Heat beat Team Cavaliers 45-34, Bryce Dailey another John P. Freeman product scored 17 points and snagged 13 rebounds to lead Team Heat to victory. In the last 7/8th-grade boy’s game, Team Spurs defeated Team Celtics, 43-39. Ernest (EJ) Smith and Jacquez Brown both had solid games for the Spurs, Smith with 13 points and Brown with 10 points. Madison Taylor had 11 points/14 rebounds and teammate Roddy Jackson finished with 11 points/7 rebounds for Team Celtics.

The 5/6th-grade boys didn’t disappoint on Saturday. Team Pistons blast past Team Nets 34-26, but it wasn’t an easy task. Marlon McShane Jr. poured in 19 points and 6 rebounds for Team Nets, but it wasn’t enough. Team Pistons had a balanced attack with several players scoring around 5 points and Kody Hickerson leading the way with 10 points.
