Metro ATL rated No. 10 for high school football nationally

Atlanta is ranked as the 10th-best metro area nationally for high school football by MaxPreps.

The rankings, compiled by MaxPreps writer Kevin Askeland, is based primarily on computer ratings.

Here are those that made the top 400 from metro Atlanta:

No. 11 Norcross
No. 110 Sandy Creek (Tyrone)
No. 113 North Gwinnett (Suwanee)
No. 132 Gainesville
No. 168 North Cobb (Kennesaw)
No. 326 South Gwinnett (Snellville)
No. 331 St. Pius X Catholic (Atlanta)

A couple of things jump out immediately for local football fans.

If St. Pius made it, what about Buford, the Class AAA champion? And if South Gwinnett, why not Grayson?

And what about Class AAAAAA runner-up Lovejoy?

DeKalb County produces more top-flight recruits than any other area in the state, but there’s no M.L. King, no Tucker, no Stephenson in the top 400.

Metro Atlanta did get extra points for Gainesville, though many don’t consider that metro Atlanta.

The No. 1 area in the country, according to MaxPreps, is Los Angeles. Five of the top 15 teams in the country are from the L.A. area.
