ROOT Sports to carry MLK Day games live

Two high school games will be televised live on ROOT Sports on Monday. No. 1 Rainier Beach and No. 10 O’Dea are scheduled to tip off at 3 p.m. and will be followed by 4A No. 2 Garfield and 3A No. 5 Franklin.

Both games will be at Garfield High School as part of the Roy Foundation Presents Unity in the Community Hoop Showcase. It is the first year for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day event.

No. 8 Beamer and Jefferson (Ore.) will tip at 7 p.m. in the third, and final, game of the day.

The event continues an old rivalry between Garfield and Franklin, one that had been discontinued until last year.

“They were just intense,” said Garfield coach Ed Haskins of the rivalry. “I remember the wall sweating. I remember [former Garfield coach] Al Hairston just being a general of a coach. I remember just the players and just the level. I started coming up here 6th, 7th grade, mid-80s. It was just so intense. There was no middle ground, that’s what I remember. There was no middle ground.

“You were either a Quaker or a Bulldog – period.”

Rainier Beach will be arriving back in Seattle late Sunday night after playing Saturday in the Spalding Hoop Hall Classic in Springfield, Mass. The Vikings leave early Friday morning for their game against Bishop O’Connell (Va.).
