Spokane, Mo., basketball player dies after practice collapse

Robyn Gordon, director of curriculum at the high school, said 17-year-old Forrest Robert Varney collapsed in the gym just after 7 a.m. She said CPR was administered before an ambulance arrived and took him to the hospital.

Gordon said a medical examiner is planning to conduct an autopsy.

In a statement released by the school district, Principal Jim Millsap said: “He was a great student and great kid, who always had a smile on his face. Forrest never met someone he didn’t want to befriend.”

In the statement, Daryl Bernskoetter, Spokane R-VII School District Superintendent, said: “Forrest was such a sincere person. He was always there for teachers and students alike. He would do anything anyone asked of him. He was friends with the whole school,”

Gordon said the district is providing counseling and support services for students and teachers.

Gordon described the high school, which serves 203 students, as a “close-knit family” and “deeply saddened by this tragic loss of one of our students.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”

Gordon said additional information and details about memorial services would likely be released Thursday.
