Sports signups: Find local teams to join; vacancies for high school coaching …


Do you have a local sporting event to list? The signup list, which runs Saturdays online and Tuesdays in The Grand Rapids Press, is available to announce community sporting events, teams looking for players and schools or teams looking for coaches.

It’s a free service. Send to grsports@mlive.com and put “Signups” in the subject line. Describe your event in sentence form and make sure to include a phone number that readers can contact, and also an email address, if possible.

Submissions are accepted no more than a month ahead of an event, and are subject to editing. The deadline for entries is 3 p.m. Thursday.

* The Grand Rapids Flames are holding individual tryouts for their 14U baseball team. To schedule a tryout please contact GRFlames@gmail.com.

* Mid Michigan Excel, an AAU basketball club, will hold tryouts for its girls teams on Oct. 27, from 4-5:30 p.m. for 6th/7th; 5:30-6:30 p.m. for 4th/5th, and 6:30-8 p.m. for 8th/HS grades at DeWitt Herbison Woods School. * City of Holland Recreation Divisionwill hold an adult basketball league. The deadline to register is Nov. 1. The league begins Nov. 13. Wednesday-Thursday night leagues are available.

Michigan Golden Gloves Boxing Gyms are looking for boxers at their gyms at 526 Broadway Nw (St Mary’s Activity Center) and King Park Gym at Fuller and Franklin (in the brick building). Hours are 6-8 p.m. nightly. Boxing: Males and females ages 11 to 40 are sought with the intention of eventually competing. Our next club show is Nov 30th.

Grand Rapids Blades invites boys and girls ages 4 to 9 to Eagles Ice Center on Saturday, Nov. 2 beginning at 10:30 a.m. for a Try Hockey for Free clinic to experience ice hockey for the first time and learn the basics of the sport in a fun, safe environment.

Heat Lacrosse will be holding tryouts for the 2014 travel teams. The dates
are U11 – Sunday Oct. 27, 2-4 p.m.; High schools – Nov. 3 at 11:20 a.m.-1 p.m. for Rising Sophomores, 1-2:30 p.m. for Rising Juniors and 2:30-4 p.m. for Rising Seniors.

The fifth Alger Heights Halloween 5K/10K/Kids’ Fun Run is Oct. 26. The USATF certified course is run through the rolling hills of the Alger Heights neighborhood. Participants are chip timed and race awards are based on these times. All proceeds go to the Alger Heights Neighborhood Association and the Salvation Army Kroc Center Scholarship Fund.
