Staten Island high school sports programs receive $10000

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Joe Ryan Memorial Committee on Wednesday celebrated its 10th anniversary of giving by presenting $10,000 to the athletic programs at five Staten Island high schools at the Staten Island Advance in Grasmere.

McKee/Staten Island Technical, Monsignor Farrell, Moore Catholic, Port Richmond and St. Joseph-by-the Sea High Schools each received $2,000 from the committee. Distributions to area high schools have totaled $81,500 over the past 10 years.

The funds were raised during the 10th annual Joe Ryan Memorial Awards Presentations and Dinner held at the Old Bermuda Inn in October.

Joe Sollazzo, Bob Ryan, Jerry Ryan, Jack Peterson, Mike Lapetina, Art Truscelli, George Healey and Bill “Red” Rogers belong to the committee named in honor of Joe Ryan, who was a coach at New Dorp High School and a Villanova University football standout who also played professional football.

Ryan, who died in 2003 at age 68, was instrumental in starting varsity football programs at Susan Wagner and St. Joseph-by-the-Sea High Schools. The field at St. Joseph-by-the-Sea is named in his honor.
