Top-ranked QB Gunner Kiel commits to top-ranked LSU

Miles took a large step toward that goal on Tuesday when Gunner Kiel — the No. 1 pro-style prep quarterback in the nation according to Rivals.com and Scout.com — committed to No. 1 LSU. Kiel’s father Kip Kiel confirmed the commitment to The Indianapolis Star.

If Kiel signs with LSU, he will be the highest-ranked prep quarterback signee for Miles since he nabbed Ryan Perrilloux out of East St. John High outside New Orleans in 2005. Perrilloux was the No. 1 dual-action quarterback in the nation that year.

The 6-4, 220-pound Kiel, out of East High in Columbus, Ind., originally committed to Indiana last July and was considering Notre Dame and Vanderbilt. He is expected to enroll at LSU next month and join the team in spring drills.

“Meeting with coach Miles and (quarterbacks) coach (Steve) Kragthorpe kind of sealed the deal for me,” Kiel told The Indianapolis Star Tuesday. “Having a chance to meet the coaches and the guys on the team gave me a good feeling about it. I woke up Friday morning and told my parents what I wanted to do. Everything happens for a reason, and I think this was God’s plan for me.”

LSU (13-0) plays No. 2 Alabama (11-1) in the Bowl Championship Series national title game on Jan. 9 in New Orleans. The Tigers’ top two quarterbacks are both seniors —Jordan Jefferson and Jarrett Lee. The No. 3 quarterback is sophomore Zach Mettenberger, who was the No. 1 junior college quarterback in the nation when he signed with LSU last December. Miles and his staff have struggled to sign, keep and develop highly ranked quarterbacks over the years. Perrilloux was eventually kicked off the team in the spring of 2007.

“I’m going to go down there and work as hard as I can for the starting spot or backup spot or whatever I can earn,” Kiel said. “I really want to be the starting quarterback, but you have to earn it.”

Kiel passed for 2,517 yards and 28 touchdowns last season and rushed for 482 yards and 11 touchdowns.
