Top USA prep boys’ track and field performers

High school girls throwers launched the outdoor track season with a pair of early records, while boys sprinter Marvin Bracy of Boone (Orlando, Fla.) posted an impressive, albeit wind-aided, 100 meter time of 10.06 seconds.

Haley Crouser of Gresham, Ore., threw the women’s javelin 181 feet, 2 inches this month to give her family complete dominance of the high school javelin records. She became the first high school girl to surpass 180 feet. Her brother Sam already holds the boys record of 255-4, set in 2010. They are the first sister-brother combination to hold national records. In addition, cousin Ryan Crouser set records in the discus and indoor shot put last year.

The former javelin record was 176-8 by Avione Allgood of Legacy (North Las Vegas, Nev.) in 2011.

Shelbi Vaughn put another school of the same name into the record book for Legacy (Mansfield, Texas). She threw the discus 191-6 to top the 190-3 standard set by Anna Jelmini of Shafter, Calif., in 2009. They are the only two high school athletes who have thrown the discus over 190 feet.

Bracy runs like the wind

Bracy ran a wind-aided 10.05 last year as a junior to win the USA Junior (under age 20) Nationals. His best legal time (aiding wind of 2.0 meters a second or less) was 10.28.

The only high school athlete to run faster than 10.05 was Jeff Demps of South Lakes (Groveland, Fla.) — 10.01 with a legal wind to set the high school record in 2008 during the U.S. Olympic trials in Eugene, Ore.

Bracy set a high school indoor record this winter at 55 meters, 6.08.

The New Balance Nationals in New York last month featured two national indoor records to climax that season.

Chariho of Wood River Junction, R.I., set the boys 4xmile relay record of 17 minutes, 20.20 seconds. They were pushed by Shaker (Latham, N.Y.), which also went under the old mark in 17:21.56.

For the girls, Erin Finn of West Bloomfield, Mich. took more than 15 seconds off the girls 5,000-meter record in 16:19.69. Haley Pierce of Tatnall School (Wilmington, Del.) was also under the old mark in 16:31.86.
